The National Research Centre for Grapes (NRCG) is a part of the National Agricultural Research System under the
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. It was established on Jan 18, 1997. The Centre is set up to carry out mission oriented research programs to resolve the problems confronting the production and utilization of grapes in India. It is also the nodal Centre for coordinating grape research in India and dissemination of the research results throughout the country. Director, NRCG is the coordinator (technical) for the All India Coordinated Research Trials on Grapes.
Research on grapes was started in late thirties in India. Need based research and high rate of adoption of research results have paved the way to achieve the world's highest productivity in India, in spite of the fact that grape is grown mostly in the tropical region of the country, where it remains evergreen and expresses high degree of apical dominance.
Although the National Research Centre for Grapes was sanctioned by the ICAR, in VIII Plan during Sep.1993, the full fledged functioning of the Centre started since May 2001 after the establishment of the Centre's new Laboratory-cum-Administrative Office building. Dr. S.D. Shikhamany was the Founder Director. The Centre is presently under the guidance and leadership of Dr. P.G. Adsule, who took charge as Acting Director from 26th July 2002.
